According to some forum threads, the plain Linux kernel 3.3 can be compiled for LS-WVL. I try to document a complete how-to recipe here.
- 3.3 kernel patches for ls-wvl http://forum.buffalo.nas-central.org/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=25941
- Fan control http://forum.buffalo.nas-central.org/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=25947
- Temperature monitor script
- init script to start the monitor daemon
- Button hotplug and patches http://forum.buffalo.nas-central.org/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=25943

- udev rule for the power switch:
