Dyn Launches Channel Reseller Program In The Americas

Manchester, NH (July 9, 2014) – Dyn, the worldwide leader in Internet performance, today announced the launch of its new reseller program in the Americas. The program is designed to help technology resellers thrive in the cloud by providing their customers with Dyn’s portfolio of essential Internet performance products, including Traffic Management and Message Management, to offer alongside similar cloud-based technology such as website hosting, CDN and a variety of security solutions.

According to CompTIA’s Fourth Annual Trends in Cloud Computing, two thirds (63 percent) of channel firms rate customer demand for cloud-based IT solutions as either very high or high, and 20 percent have actually lost a deal because a customer needed a cloud solution that the firm did not offer. Dyn’s reseller program is designed to help these channel firms meet this increasing demand with onsite sales and sales engineer training, all with minimum overhead cost.

Dyn has recently signed resellers in North America, like Emergent Networks.

The recent tie up between Amazon and Twitter, providing a new shopping experience to consumers so they can now order Amazon products through a custom hashtag, is a present-day example of businesses collaborating effectively to expand customer offerings. 

If Twitter’s user base continues to grow, there will be more opportunity for Amazon to sell products. Equally, the more products Amazon sells through social, the more other brands are likely to try a similar proposition, which will lead to additional ad revenue for Twitter.

However, there is a responsibility that comes with partnerships such as this: suddenly providing an exceptional user experience is the duty of both companies. Twitter’s brand reputation – a company’s most valuable currency – is linked to Amazon. And vice versa.

At the core of this operation is Internet performance. What You Need To Know About Canada’s SPAM Legislation

As you may have heard, Canada’s anti-spam legislation (CASL) is now in effect, but what does this mean in plain English?

Canada is actually a little late to the party with putting anti-spam legislation in place. Passed in 2010, and effective July 2014, this is well behind many other countries. The US and Australia put their legislations in place back in 2003, for example.

A Deeper Look At CASL

As always, best practices rule the day. If you are clearly opting in recipients to your marketing lists, honoring unsubscribe requests, and tracking user engagements, you shouldn’t have any drastic changes ahead. Here’s a summary of what CASL enforces:

  • Senders have a three year grace period for current recipients to obtain explicit consent. This specifically means a documented opt-in to receive your promotional mailings. NOTE: this legislation specifically states that “pre-checked” checkboxes are NOT consent.
  • Implied consent is defined as someone you did business with or got an email address from a transaction. You can mail to them within 6 months of receiving address and for up to two years. There is no similar time restriction with explicit consent.
  • Email capture should not be dual-purpose (aka co-registration) or via “read our terms and conditions.” It must be 100% clear what your users are opting into.
  • Every email must contain:
    1. Name of the sender
    2. Physical Mailing address of the sender
    3. Secondary contact info for sender (phone, email, or website)
  • Your unsubscribe link must work for 60 days after the message is sent.
  • Fines are up to 1 million CAD for personal and 10 million CAD for business.

What Does This Mean For My Sends?

These rules apply to anyone sending email to or from a Canadian location. As mentioned above, if you are in good standing with most current spam laws, you should be in good shape. Be aware of some key differences with other legislation, like the required 60-day unsubscribe availability vs. the required 30 in the U.S.

Consolidating Dyn Advanced Features via CNAME Records

The Dyn Anycast platform offers some great advanced features to help you accomplish your load balancing, disaster recovery, and geo-targeting solutions. Advanced services are attached to hostnames, and we quantify them for your scope in a number-of-instances model. So, if you need advanced features on a number of hostnames, having independent services on all of them might increase your scope.

Here at Dyn we believe in transparency and truly want you to have the right number of advanced features that fit your needs.  The following will show how you can consolidate advanced features where applicable using a Canonical Name (CNAME).

CNAME records alias one hostname to another. For example, many customers make an alias for their domain to make it so visitors don’t have to type in the “www.” (www.example.com to example.com). This ensures that both www.example.com and example.com are utilizing the same endpoint with less management.

What you need to think about when determining the number of advanced features you may need is not necessarily the number of hostnames that you have, but the number of unique IP Address configurations or traffic patterns you have on these various hostnames.

Let’s look at an example scenario: you want to configure Active Failover on 5 hostnames in a zone that all share the same primary IP address (1.1.1.1) and you want them all to failover to the same secondary IP (2.2.2.2). CNAME records allow you to configure a single instance of Active Failover on one hostname and point the record back to the initial hostname for every similar configuration. You can see an example of this configuration on the Dyn platform below:

CNAME Reduction

Since these hostnames have a CNAME record on it which is pointing to the host with the Active Failover, you will always get the same response for all of these hostnames whether Active Failover is serving its primary healthy address or the secondary “failover” address. To make this even better, DynECT collapses any request in the same authority, so the response is handed out in the initial look up (no extra DNS look up, and a lightning fast response time!).

CNAME Reduction

For customers that have many advanced features and would like a central zone to manage them on, our clients will often look to making a management zone. In this, you don’t get the benefit of having the CNAME collapse, but you will have fewer places to manage your services and limiting access to your admin users is much easier. In the end, it comes down to being a trade off of what you value most for the project.

This weekend we will be removing the following wikis due to lack of usage:

  • D-Link
  • Freecom
  • Linksys
  • Maxtor
  • Synology
In the future articles for manufacturers that do not have their own specific wiki will go in the main portal. When we have enough articles to justify a wiki for a manufacturer then we will create one and move the articles over.

In addition we will most likely be doing some updates to the rest of the wikis this weekend to bring them up to the latest version of MediaWiki. Also we are slowly fixing the links back to the new main portal – this work is on-going but coming together.

Today we updated all the forums to the latest version of phpBB and following this we upgraded the nas-central blog. Also we fixed an issue with news reporting to the wikis from the blog.

You may have noticed that we have changed the main portal back to a wiki too as this is useful for general articles that are not device specific. There is still some more content to restore to this area and a bunch of links that need fixing that link there from the other wikis – please bear with us while this happens.

Tonight also we will be looking at upgrading the bug tracker and possibly merging the foonas bug tracker into this area.

Donation Drive Update – Server Disks Needed!

We are looking to upgrade our storage on our server with a couple of 2 TB disks. To do this we need to raise approximately $550 USD. We will be using what is currently in the reserve towards this but we need your help getting the rest.

We are advert free and do our best to provide you with this resource thanks to your kind donations. Three years ago you helped us buy a new server, which is now hosted for free at OSUOSL – this is the first new server hardware we have needed since then.

We hope this will be easy to achieve if everyone can give a little!

This is just a logical decision which helps users to find the right information in the adequate place and to prevent some to try stuff that will definitely not work on their box. So if there are some nice articles anywhere, link them but do not copy them.
As all three communities are using mediawiki now maybe InterWiki is the way to a virtual big community?

28.6.2006: ElGringo has merged the topics and postings from the old forum into the current forum and it's like it was always here
He did an unbelievable job, saving a very important part of the community's knowledge. Some of the internal links in the forum do not work. If you linked articles from the Wiki to the Forum you'll have to fix the links. But otherwise it's a HUGE save.



28.6.2006: Anonymous access restored. You no longer have to login to edit pages. Unless there is vandalism or strong user feedback it will stay this way. I encourage you to login before making changes for traceability, but you are not required to. "Nix" on linkstationwiki.org made the suggestion to go back to anonymous and I have no problem restoring it. If you have an opinion on this, check this thread and post a reply:

22.6.2006: Look at the testforum ! ElGringo did some really nice work here. He parsed the html-pages of the old forum with some scripts and recreated all the threads + postings from the old forum!

We are currently thinking about how we should proceed with the forum transfer.

20.6.2006: Porting of all the wiki pages has finished
Thanks to Shrike, Bauldrick, Flavoie, timtimred (and maybe some unknown contributors) - all the information is ported to the new wiki now.



16.6.2006: Server & Domain Transfer
Because frontalot didn't show up by the 16th of June we decided to finally move to a new account at powweb and register a new domain. mindbender setup the wiki, the forum & the bugtracker - it was time to port all the information to a new site!

14.6.2006: Wiki Information Migration
We need to plan a bit, especially about how we should organize the information on this new wiki. The pages that we are creating now, copy/pasted off the old one, follow the highly disorganized and confusing way the old one was made. That is something I wanted to address in the bery beginning, so we might have a plan ready to go when everything is finally imported. --Shrike 19:43, 14 June 2006 (EDT)

We are currently moving all the information of the wiki at www.linkstationwiki.org (which will expire on the 6th of July) to this wiki here.



14.6.2006: Designing a new Structure After moving the pure information, we will think of and implement a new structure in the wiki. We want to make it easier to find the information anyone is searching for. The main problem for that is that there are many different versions of the Linkstation (LS1 , LS2, HG, HS)

Then we can finally go back to the stuff we really like: Develop the software & firmware images and enhance the linkstation.
